In anticipation of the next round of fighting, these stocks are trading at valuations below even the traumatic tail of 2001. Though quicker than other types of equity to recover postbellum, this holds true only for short and decisive conflicts.


Analysts often monitor the performance of theme and amusement parks to divine trends in the industry as a whole. This would prove impossible in Europe where the culture of theme and entertainment grounds is still in its infancy.


Denmark has Legoland and Tivoli. France boasts the recently recovering Disneyland, Vulcania and Futuroscope. Germany has Phantasialand. Italy sports Gardaland. Spain joins the continent's minimal offerings with Port Aventura and Terra Mitica. The Dutch De Efteling spent the last decade "Americanizing" its facilities.


Only the United Kingdom has more than a smattering "pleasure beaches" and "worlds of adventure". A recently mooted Dracula theme park in Romania was shot down by irate citizens and an overweening bureaucracy. "New Europe" is no better than "Old Europe" when it comes to entrepreneurship.


In both market penetration and spending per visitor, Europe is at least a decade behind the USA. Indeed, the eerie paucity of theme parks is symptomatic of the generally moribund, rigid and hyper-regulated economies of the European Union. The continent has less than half America's number of parks per 10 million denizens and one third its visits per head per year.


Only 20 major European attractions garner more than 1 million in annual attendance. Another 50 or so attract less than 1 million patrons. With revenues of c. $2 billion, Europe's parks combined amount to one third the sector in the USA and underperform many parks in Asia as well.


European firms are still woefully primitive when it comes to marketing and educating their public. According to the Economic Research Associates, a consultancy, venture capital is rare and usually squandered by developers on wages and other "soft", non-productive costs. Management is inexperienced and peripatetic.


In Asia, theme parks are considered the magic pill. Japan has Disney World and the Tokyo DisneySea Park. Disney is slated to open a giant franchise in Hong Kong in 2005. Mainland China is eyeing the experiment favorably. Universal Studios countered by inaugurating a themed playground in Osaka in 2001 and by embarking on three feasibility studies in China.


From Jakarta, Indonesia (the Taman Ria amusement park) to Vietnam - everyone is climbing on the bandwagon. There seems to be a dearth of American interest in Europe despite its far higher purchasing power and the existence of a single business address - the European Commission.


Theme parks are multifarious businesses. They provide work to thousand of small suppliers in a virtuous ripple effect. Hosting and gaming experts, marketers, managers, on-site employees, suppliers of logistics, food retailers and caterers, entertainers - all benefit mightily from the presence of such grounds. The park's brand is often parlayed into trinkets, toys, clothes and souvenirs sold by locals to tourists, both domestic and foreign.


Destination travel is a growth sector.


The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, a trade group, reported that worldwide park attendance was up one quarter between 1991-2001 to 319 million people. During this decade, revenues perked up by 50 percent to almost $10 billion annually. This was largely due to a rise in per capita spending within the grounds from $23 to $30. Returns on - usually massive - investments are impressive even in saturated markets such as the United States.


The profitability of theme parks frequently balances losses spawned by more glamorous bits of entertainment groups. Amusement grounds - themed or not - are astoundingly immune to geopolitical upheavals. Attendance in Disney's US parks declined by only c. 5 percent during the 1991 Gulf War. Even September 11 failed to dent it measurably.


EuroDisney is partly to blame for the scarcity of themed parks in Europe. For many years it was perceived, quite correctly, as an insatiable white elephant gulping rivers of red ink. Reality moved on but impressions - fostered by smug pundits - lasted. Wary investors and governments throughout the Old Continent confined themselves to the mostly family-operated "garden parks" and "carnival grounds" built during the 1960s and 1970s.


The truth is that Disney's Parisian adventure is flourishing. The entertainment behemoth is planning to invest c. $540 million in Walt Disney Studios, an annex of the French outfit. This is projected to add 5 million visitors to the current 12.


Another satisfied investor is Six Flags. The operator recently expanded to Mexico and Europe where it runs the six sites of the former Walibi Parks and Movie world, an erstwhile Warner Bros. property in Germany. It soon added a Spanish Movie World to its portfolio. Non-US operations already account for 15 percent of its sales.


But these are the exceptions that prove the rule. Europe is staid and serious. It prefers indigenous high-brow culture to American low-brow imports. Or so the French would have us all believe.


Real estate research by talking

Real estate research might start with a look at the U. S. Census information about a town. It can include inspections of specific properties, too. There are many statical tools and information that can help, but don't forget one of the easiest and most useful research tools: talking. Let me explain with a true story.


My wife and I were on vacation, and stopped in Farmington, New Mexico for a few days. We were about to buy a house for a winter project. The plan was to fix it up and sell it in the spring for a profit.


Just prior to making an offer, we took a last walk-through. As the owner showed me around, my wife started to talk to the woman who was renting the home. She told Ana that half of the outlets in the home didn't work, as well as other useful information.


This got me thinking, and I went down to the basement for a second look at the wiring. Not only did the house likely need all new wiring, but I found a garden hose attached to a natural gas line. The owner shrugged and said, "You can just cut that off."


To this day, I don't know what that was about, but for these and other reasons, we didn't buy the house. It helps to talk to anyone you can when looking at a house or other real estate investment. Neighbors and renters are especially helpful.

Talking to a lot of people isn't just useful for information on individual properties. It is also a great way to research a town. I once called the Chamber of Commerce of Deming, New Mexico. The chairman's casually commented that the city was using up the water faster than the aquifer was being replenished. They had no back-up plan. This was enough for us to cross Deming off our list.


If you want to know about a town, use the phone first. Find any excuse to call anyone from a real estate agent to a random resident. Ask about crime, whether the local government welcomes new businesses, what the climate is like. Have houses been sitting for sale for a long time, or do they go fast? What are the good and bad things about the town?


Before we moved to Tucson, Arizona, part of our real estate research was to call people in potential towns to see if they owned a snow shovel. If so, we crossed the town off the list. Two places can both get 45 inches of snow per year, but in some it stays all winter, and in others it melts before noon. The snow shovel question told us the truth behind the statistics.


Once you're in a town, a good local bar can be a great place to do your research. After a beer, patrons will tell you what big employers are about to move in or out of the town, how fast homes are selling, whether there are gangs, and much more. Talking to people is a good way to do real estate research, but verify what you hear. People do sometimes exaggerate.

The letting of flats

The person who buys a piece of land is known as a freeholder. This title confers complete ownership of the land and the buildings on it until they either sell the land on or leave it to someone else when they die.


Many people buy individual flats that are part of a purpose-built block. They will normally hold a lease for a certain period of time. They are allowed to occupy the flat during that time. They can sell the lease on the flat within that time period and pass on the remainder of the time to the new leaseholder.


For example:


A flat is bought on a leasehold in 1999. The term of the lease was 99 years when originally granted in 1955. In 1999 the outstanding term was 55 years.


A person in this position are usually regarded as owning the property outright. In reality they are in a similar legal position to a weekly tenant in the sense that they pay a ground rent and service charges to a higher landlord (the freeholder) for maintenance, services, insurance and management of the whole building (which includes their flat) and are the leaseholder of the freeholder are bound by the terms of the lease.


If the leaseholder then lets out the flat they must ensure that they fulfil the terms and conditions of the tenancy agreement between themselves and THEIR tenant. Depending on when they moved in these tenants will be tenants under the Rent Act 1977 or the Housing Acts 1988 or 1996. Certain conditions of the lease with the freeholder will apply to the tenancy usually relating to the common parts of the building which remain in the ownership of the freeholder.


Problems may arise for the tenant when repairs to the structure are needed (such as replacing windows). The Assured tenant will expect his landlord to effect repairs (Section 11 Landlord & Tenant Act 1985). The landlord who is the leaseholder of the property will expect HIS landlord (i. e. the freeholder) to undertake this kind of repair as specified by his lease.


If the tenant cannot get the repairs done he may need to sue the landlord, who in turn will need to pursue the freeholder. This can be a lengthy process for the tenant and they might need to approach the Environmental Health (Private Sector Housing) department who have the power (after inspecting the problem) to get the repairs done.


This complex freehold/leasehold system is currently undergoing reform with a new tenure called commonhold that will bring increased rights for existing long leaseholders.

While there are a ton of online sites offering 'free' credit reports, there are really only three major credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian (which used to be TRW) and TransUnion.


If you go to one of their sites ( www. experian. com, www. equifax. com, www. transunion. com ). You'll quickly discover that the "free" report they offer directly requires you to sign up, using a credit card, for a monthly service.


These monthly services offer you thirty days free - but you absolutely must remember to cancel your membership before the 30 days end or you will be charged.


Each site also contains information about how to obtain an actual free report. This information, which is basically identical on all three sites, states the following: Under Federal law, you have the right to receive a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies. To request your free annual report under that law, go to www. annualcreditreport. com.


I thought that was very interesting and went to check out the process. Oddly enough when I went to that site, I got an error page and the following message:


"The page cannot be found


The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable."


This is not a default server/browser error page. The URL for it is: https://www. annualcreditreport. com/notfound. htm


I went and checked Google and their last saved copy of the 'real' page was from April 28, 2006. I was unable to find any indication of why the page has been removed, but at least at the moment you have no access to this page despite the fact that it is essentially mandated by Federal law. Of course, I'm not a lawyer and it's not entirely clear to me exactly what agreements underlie the creation of this site, but the Federal Trade Commission pages link to this site. Somebody created that notfound. htm and it seems to me they really should have provided an explanation of why our access to the real free online credit reports is being denied - even if it is just temporary.


The following information is part of what was on that site according to the copy stored on Google from 04/28/2006:


" You may request your free credit report online, by phone or through the mail. Free credit reports requested online are viewable immediately upon authentication of identity. Free credit reports requested by phone or mail will be processed within 15 days of receiving your request.


This central site allows you to request a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.


AnnualCreditReport. com is the official site to help consumers to obtain their free credit report."


Now that would all be very nice - if it were accessible. Hopefully it will have become accessible again by the time you are reading this.


If not, here is the information from the FTC on how to get your free credit report:

While supposedly you can request a free report on the companies websites, I failed to find a way to do that without signing up for their monthly service and then canceling before the free 30 days were over. You could try calling them, however, to request a free report:

Using annualcreditreport. com or mailing an Annual Credit Report Request Form to the Annual Credit Report Request Service, you can request reports from one or all three credit reporting companies. With any other 'free' option for accessing your credit reports, you need to sign up with all three companies or pay for an additional service that will provide all three reports.

If you're in a hurry and need your report fast, your best bet will be to go directly to one (or all) of the 3 sites above and go ahead and sign-up. You will need to give them a credit card and more personal information than you might like, but they no doubt have much more extensive information about you on file already. Going to any other site (than one of these three) means you will be sharing your information in places you really don't need to. You also potentially could end up on a fraudulent or imposter site.


When you go to a site use a valid link from the FTC or type the address in yourself. When you arrive, verify the address. Identity theft does happen so the extra effort involved in being sure about what you're doing is critically important.


If, for some reason, you need to track your credit reporting history closely, you could request your free reports individually, spreading your requests over the year. While the information may vary from one company to another, spreading out the requests does give you the ability to check more frequently without having to buy reports or maintain a membership at one or more of the credit reporting agencies.

And while it's a little more time consuming and you'll need to wait to receive your reports, you can always use the mail or call (1-877-322-8228) to get your free reports from the Annual Credit Report Request Service.


Be smart, don't pay for something you don't need. If you signup for a 30 day free membership to get your free report, cancel it as soon as you have your report. These companies are required by law to provide a free annual credit report. But, on their own websites, they're smart enough to offer the free report as bait for a membership. This lets them squeeze some extra bucks out of a legal requirement when people forget to cancel within the 30 days limit. Plus they also offer a variety of other, more expensive, credit report plans that sound enticing but which very very few people really need.

Here’s an estate-planning technique that allows you to lower the tax sting to your heirs, and that reduces your retirement income in case you don’t think you will need all of your Individual Retirement Account funds in retirement. It’s called a “stretch IRA,” or “Multi-generational IRA,” a complex investment tools that allow you to extend the tax-deferred status of your IRA long after your death.


By naming your children and grandchildren as the beneficiaries of your retirement assets, you enable them to stretch out the annual distributions of that IRA over the course of their lifetimes.


Structuring the stretch


There are four primary approaches to structuring a stretch IRA; the traditional, spousal-rollover, participant-direct and the mixed, or combination, approach.


In the traditional set-up, your spouse is the primary beneficiary and your children or grandchildren are the contingent beneficiaries, however distributions and income tax deferral are extended only through the life expectancy of the oldest beneficiary. By using the Spousal Rollover Approach instead, your spouse remains the primary heir and children or grandchildren become the beneficiaries with their own IRAs. This strategy allows the distributions and income tax deferrals to extend through-out the lifetime of the beneficiaries you name. That, in turn, provides significantly more tax deferral and a much longer opportunity for that IRA investment to grow.


If neither you nor your spouse need to dip into the IRA during your lifetime, you could also consider structuring your multi-generational IRA using the Participant Direct approach, which can provide the greatest tax benefit of all.


Using this strategy, you’ll be asked to break up your retirement assets into several different IRAs like the spousal rollover-except that your children and grandchildren, not your spouse, are listed as the primary beneficiaries, so you can lower the amount of the minimum distributions you are forced to take out once you hit age 70-1/2, and leave more money behind for your heirs.


Lastly, there’s the Mixed approach. A combination of strategies from the stretch IRA, it is structured as a spousal rollover with the remainder under the participant direct category. If you backup, you are one step away from a disaster. If you backup often, make it several steps. Learn how often to backup and how to make your own backup schedule.


Surely, one can backup to whatever backup medium he wants, but if one does not stick to a backup schedule, most of the efforts, aimed at storing or securing the important information will be spent in vain.


First, we need to figure out what we are backing up, as the backup schedule largely depends on the size of the backup data:


- small amounts of data (important work documents) can be backed up often, hourly, daily and at least weekly


- medium amounts of files (e-mail messages, project documents and work documents) can be backed up daily, weekly or monthly (at least)


- large amounts of data (e-mail messages, project documents, data files, settings files, etc) can be backed up weekly or monthly


- huge amounts of data (all of the above plus images, audios - mp3s and videos - mpegs) can be backed up monthly or yearly


- total backup (a backup of all the data on the computer) can be backed up weekly, monthly or yearly.


Which backup schedule to choose is up to you, but you will also need to choose a backup software to do that and set up the time when to perform a scheduled backup.


First of all, the backup software needs to support the backup medium you want to backup (CD, DVD, FTP, LAN, external USB or flash drive, etc). Next, you select the files you want to backup, choose the time you want to backup and leave it there. Some programs can run as a service and don't need to be launched, but some need to be running when you want the backup to be run. At any case, the computer has to be on at the time of your backup schedule.


Think the time of a backup schedule doesn't matter? What if it runs during your work day and slows down your work computer for an hour or two? To keep working _and_ to stick to the backup schedule, simply set the backup to run a couple of hours before or after your working time. This way you won't be interrupted with a scheduled backup.

He hired a computer consultant to train the new employee. The problem with this is the person he was training lacked knowledge about computers. This was a very expensive way to replace his original manager. He realized he had hired himself. He also lacks knowledge of computers and had too much empathy for his new manager. He remembered when he was younger and wanted to give his new manager a chance to advance. That empathy was costing him in time, money, productivity and the computer consultants hefty bills. I suggested he hire someone with computer experience and stop the suffering. He agreed and within two week his business was back on track. He was too close to the situation to see this clearly.


2. Learn from your past


Just like a kid has to fall a couple of times when learning to ride a bike, so do entrepreneurs fail as they learn how to be successful. Learn from the past and set up systems and structures so that whatever occurred can never happen again. Solve problems for a lifetime not just a quick fix. Don't run your business like a fireman, run your business like an architect. Build a sustainable future instead of putting out daily fires.


3. Set Yourself and Your Company Up For Maximum Productivity.


Give everyone the computers and other tools they need to process information immediately. Automate the reporting of, access to, and flow of information so no human help is required. Develop a culture where any blocks to productivity are removed by your staff instead of you. Focus everyone on profits and growth. Grow your people as much as your company is growing. If you company is growing 50% annually, then your staff needs to grow at least that much. Hire people based more on attitude and behavior versus experience. Spend one day a week with your best customers listening, collaborating, suggesting, understanding. Have a relationship between you and your customers; not just a selling relationship. What you will be offering or selling to customers in five years may change in form or substance to what you're offering now. Learn from your clients instead of just selling to them. Clients really appreciate sharing their views and needs with companies will listen. Let the customer create the questions on a survey instead of just giving their answers. A coach can help you to develop a system of learning from their customers and develop relationships.


5. Maintain a Healthy Balance


Your free time is the largest ingredient in recharging your batteries to think more clearly and create solutions for a solid future. Maintain a balance between work, play and family. This is critical for long term success. We all put in crazy hours on a short term basis to get a hot project done or the product out the door, but if you do this on a long term, regular basis it is a dangerous sign that you are losing perspective. You need to be able to step away on a regular basis and get your batteries recharged. Have time for your family because if they suffer it is almost a sure bet your business will suffer too. Plan your free time for the next three months. This is usually the first thing that people eliminate. After you schedule your free time in your planner, get out your scissors and cut the time out of your planner to resist the temptation of erasing, crossing out or whiting out your scheduled free time.


6. Be A Role Model Of Excellence And Encourage The Same In Your Employees.


Entrepreneurs want to grow their business. In order for your business to grow, you must grow personally. Your efforts are best spent developing you. If you don't give your all or let an inferior produced product go out the door to a client, you are sending a message to your employees that you do not respect your clients or your work. Your employees will adopt that view as well. Set the example of giving the extra effort, pitching in when needed, caring about people, be the best in your particular business, continue your growth curve, and take care of your employees. Encourage innovation and creation. Give your employees a stake in the future. Once a month, have a meeting where the employees make suggestions on how to improve your product, service, efficiency, or bottom line. Get your employees involved in the productivity game. One of my clients decided to play the productivity game with his employees. The game is; the employees get to share in the profits of the money saved in one year. Within a week they asked him to relieve the cleaning company of their duties. They took turns cleaning the office on their time to lower the operating costs. My client was thrilled. Give monetary rewards when the ideas produce increases to the bottom line and positive encouragement for the process. Create an atmosphere where employees are willing and able to talk with you. The two best sources of information on how your business is doing and how to improve it are your employees and your customers. Pay attention to both.


7. Don't rest on your laurels.


Always be prepared to change. Look for things to do more efficiently or how to improve your service or product. Identify and remove as many consequences and risks as possible. Insure yourself where you are most vulnerable in your business. Handle all legal issues. Errors in judgment and changing trends can have a negative impact on your business.


8. Minimize all your risks.


A coach will help you identify all of the events, people, trends, etc. that may adversely affect your business. Where are you most vulnerable in your business? Accounts receivable, employees, suppliers etc. Constantly evaluate your competition and benchmark yourself against them. The minute you think you don't need to improve anything is the exact moment you are blinding yourself and can be easily affected by your competition's growth.

Should We Learn Spanish Because the Hispanic Population is Growing?


The numbers read that over 400 million Spanish speakers are in the world. Therefore, Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language right under English, Chinese and Hindustani. Additionally, now that Hispanic commerce is booming in North America, it is important for business competitors all over the world to find some way to keep up.


Most people don't know that over 91% of fortune 500 companies and forbes international 800 companies cannot meet the needs of people who speak a foreign language because they do not have the ability to respond correctly to a foreign language.


Since learning Spanish would increase the general ability to communicate with the large amount of immigrants that come into the country each year, some wonder if requiring Americans to learn Spanish would be the solution to keeping up with the increasing needs of the Hispanic culture.


There are two different sides to this issue. Some believe that Americans should learn Spanish because if Americans learn Spanish, they would mostly help themselves in the long run. When people learn Spanish, they are able to have a more competitive resume when they move into the work force. Such an edge in the job market would then allow Spanish learners to demand higher pay than other job searchers who can only speak English. Furthermore, if fortune 500 companies are not able to satisfy the needs of Spanish speakers, the Americans who learn Spanish will become like precious jewels among these types of companies.


Also, when people learn Spanish, they learn about another culture. Learning about other cultures decreases the likelihood of discrimination not only in relation to the Spanish culture, but other cultures in general. People will become more aware that other types of people exist, and that these people have needs and wants that may be different from their own. An increase in cultural awareness cannot help but be beneficial to the general mindset of Americans.


On the other hand, many people believe that since the amount of Hispanic immigrants is so large, Hispanics often get very comfortable when they come to the U. S., and often they don't feel that they have to learn English. It is not rare for immigrants in the United States to either never learn English or remain in America for many years without even trying to learn the language.


It seems that if Americans were required to learn Spanish whether by their jobs or schools, Hispanic immigrants would find even greater comfort and feel that they do not have to learn English. Americans that learn Spanish would continue to experience all of the benefits of the language. However, Hispanics would experience many negatives.


A Hispanic living in the US who does not learn to speak English would experience a lack in the number of jobs they are eligible for. Therefore, such a person may experience high levels of unemployment or poverty and may only be able to obtain jobs that require manual labor. Other workers will be able to pick and choose where they would like to be employed.


With the increase in Hispanic businesses many companies may push their employees to learn Spanish. However, it does not look like it will be a requirement any time in the near future.


Red eye

Red Eye and Your Digital Camera


You’ve seen the dreaded demon-eye effect that occurs when the camera flash bounces off the eye of a person or pet. An otherwise wonderful picture can be ruined by this. Technically, this is called red-eye and is caused when the pupil of your subject’s eye is wide open and the light from the camera’s flash reflects off the subjects retina. In people, the color ends up red; in pets, the color is often green.


Many photo editing programs include a red-eye correction filter, but this may not allow your photograph subject to appear “normal. These filters also do not work on the green effect produced in a pet’s eyes. Photo stores sell pens that are used to clear up red-eye, but again they are not always natural-looking and do not work on the green. The best thing is to prevent the demon-eye effect from the start.


It is rare to find a digital camera that does not come with a red-eye reduction feature. This feature can be turned off or on. It is best left on in all circumstances other than direct sunlight. The red-eye reduction feature works by flashing a short burst of light at your subject before you snap the picture. This burst of light causes the subject’s pupil to close and makes it less likely for the camera’s flash to reflect off the retina. This in turn reduces the chance of red-eye.


It also helps to direct the flash of your camera so it does not directly hit your subject’s eyes. Bouncing the flash off a nearby wall or other object will soften its effect and reduce the chances of this unwanted malady. Between bouncing the flash and using your digital camera’s red-eye reduction feature, your little angel, whether human or animal, will have eyes that don’t glow.
